Teeth Whitening

Research shows that Americans spend over a billion dollars on teeth whitening products or services each year. Having white teeth is beneficial as it makes your smile brighter, your teeth look healthy, and it is often a confidence booster. One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to get their teeth white is spending too much money on over-the-counter treatments, as teeth whitening is most effective when done by a dental professional. Below are some of the top facts about teeth whitening.

Top Teeth Whitening Facts

Consider the following teeth whitening facts the next time you consider the treatment.

It’s Not Harmful:

Professional teeth whitening is extremely safe. It’s a common misconception that teeth whitening is harmful for your teeth. The process involves temporarily opening the pores in your teeth through active ingredients, which helps lift stains off of them. Your teeth naturally rehydrate and re-mineralize after each whitening session. So no harm is actually done in the process.

Sensitivity is Normal:

The teeth whitening process can cause sensitivity as your teeth are temporarily dehydrated so that the process can lift stains off of your teeth. The temporary dehydration reduces the ability of your tooth to insulate the nerve from temperature changes which is what causes the sensitivity. The sensitivity does not last for more than 12 to 36 hours after the treatment. If you already have sensitive teeth, it’s helpful to let your dentist know as there are post-whitening products that can help rehydrate your teeth to shorten the sensitivity period.

Multiple Treatments Needed:

Teeth whitening requires multiple treatments to achieve your desired results. The amount of treatments needed depends on the severity of your stains in addition to how white you’d like to get your teeth. Teeth whitening requires multiple treatments because it is not chemically possible or safe for the whitening agent to achieve those results in such a short time.

Professional vs. OTC Whitening Treatments:

In the long run, it is more effective to get your teeth professionally treated. Professional teeth whitening done by dental professionals is superior to over-the-counter treatments as they are skilled in multiple treatment options and understand your unique dental health and needs. This is helpful as they can use the treatment option that is best for you. Professional teeth whitening is also more cost-effective, in addition to more effective at actually getting your teeth whiter.

Crowns and Veneers:

If for any reason you do not have your natural teeth, it’s important to understand that dental crowns and veneers cannot be whitened. When they are made, they are created to match your surrounding teeth at the time you get the crowns or veneers. However, the good news is that they don’t stain. With that, you’ll just need to whiten your natural teeth enough to match your crowns and veneers again.

Teeth Whitening Treatments

Getting teeth can drastically improve the look of your smile and even boost your self-confidence. The process is straightforward and simple. We have two options in our office.  Zoom whitening in which the dentist will record the current shade of your teeth and polish them before the treatment. Your mouth will be fully prepped to keep:

  • All your teeth dry
  • Your gums protected
  • And your tongue away from the whitening solution

Once prepped, we apply the whitening solution and use a UV light to activate the solution. The solution will remain on your teeth for between 30 to 60 minutes before rinsing and removing and remaining solution. Once completed your dentist will show you your newly whitened teeth and how many shades lighter achieved.

The alternative is a gentler process.  Impressions of your teeth will be taken and custom bleaching trays will be fabricated.  The doctor will discuss how to use the overnight bleaching agent and for how long.  Your results will be revealed of the course of 1 to 2 weeks.  This process seems slower however the results are a deeper, gentler teeth whitening.
